How to Overcome Perfectionism
My toxic trait is trying to be perfect before coming to Jesus.
Where I only want to come to Him on my good days - the ones where I know I did a good job at following His word rather on the days that I struggled and sinned a million times over.
I only go to God when my prayers are “holy enough” and asking for a friend to know who God is instead of the hard prayers of Lord, I don’t believe your Word, I’m angry with you, I think x, y, and z are ridiculous.
I only think that God wants to hear my prayers once I’ve got it all figured out. I tell him, Lord - look this is exactly what I’m going to do because this is what I think is your will and what’s best.
It is my prayer that if you struggle with perfectionism, you declare this affirmation over yourself.
God isn’t looking for perfect. He’s looking for me.
He wants us in our imperfection. In our seemingly too big mess that we’ve deemed “too much to handle,” all He wants is for us to come into his presence as we are, boldly and confidently before Him.
“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
Hebrews 4:16 NKJV
Because that’s the power of grace - that there’s nothing that we could ever do to deserve it, so we just accept it as this free gift. This gift unlocks a new freedom to come to the throne of God in any capacity, as we are.
It’s overwhelming to understand that He isn’t looking for us to be anything more than what we are because everything that we are is all that He wants.
God has been so patient in singing this truth over me and I hope as you open up your eyes to see moments where perfectionism tries to rob you from coming before God, you realize that now, here as you are is exactly as He wants you.
